Success or Significance: Which are you drawn toward?

Success or Significance: Which are you drawn toward?

Success can mean the credentials you seek, the degrees you achieve, the salary you reach, the title or position you want, or even a big office with a window. Notice the operative word…you! Significance, on the other hand, is about others and how you can bring value to your employees, students, or team. There is a place for success in career building but there is an end point to success. However, significance multiplies over and over again and there is no end. Success can provide the platform for significance but you don’t have to be successful to be significant and add value to others. Listen to the video about a man I met who said “I’ve made it.” In significance you never “make it”…you just keep on adding value and help others grow to be significant too. Be successful at being significant!

The Value of Consistency

The Value of Consistency

How valuable is CONSISTENCY in your personal relationships and at work? This seems to be paramount in child rearing, training our pets, and in establishing boundaries and interactions with students. COVID has really impacted people’s lives and how the lack of consistency has played a huge role. The uncertainty and the many changes that we’ve experienced has disrupted the “consistent” flow of how we operate and communicate. Consistency adds to the trust in human connections, whether in business or in personal lives. If you have lost that consistency, begin and return to a place of consistency so that connections with others remain strong and resilient!

What’s the difference between a HABIT and a ROUTINE?

What’s the difference between a HABIT and a ROUTINE and how does consistency play a role? Habits are behaviors we have, often without much thought, that can be good for us or not. Routines are a collection of habits that we do consistency over time to add predictability to our lives. A morning routine may include habits such as drinking a cup of coffee, walking the dog, having a quiet time, and a good breakfast before facing the rest of the world. The consistency is the glue that helps us stick to the habit and role out the routine every day. If you are feeling out of control or sense chaos, then add some habits and a routine in your life that can create efficiency and order to unpredictable circumstances.

Are you “a” Character or “of” Character?

Are you “a” Character or “of” Character?

Are you “A” Character or “Of” Character? What’s the difference? This was a sentimental day to talk about my brother Gary and my Dad (both passed) as they were examples of these types of “Characters.” Do you know Characters in your life – silly, goofy, stand out, unique? Do you know people who are “of” Character – operate from a good place, are trustworthy, honest, show up, follow through, people of their word, consistent, and do the right thing? “A” Character can have good Character too. Good Character goes a long way in your connections with others, in how you model leadership and in how you operate in life. If you work on nothing else, know that a person OF good Character will be worth sharing with others.

What’s the connection between Leadership and Vulnerability?

What’s the connection between Leadership and Vulnerability?

What’s the connection between LEADERSHIP and VULNERABILITY? They both involve courage, strength, stepping out and taking risks. They both involve connecting and building relationships with people. The ability to be emotionally vulnerable, even in a leadership role, can impact your effectiveness as a leader. Yes, both can be scary but instead of thinking scary, think of the courage, strength and bravery it takes to be vulnerable, especially when you are leading. It’s hard to lead yourself but a good place to start is to be vulnerable.
