Life & Work with Rena Koesler of Morrison, CO

Featured in VoyageDenver

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rena Koesler.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am a former professor turned entrepreneur. I took the most favorite parts of being a professor and created a Business Coaching and speaking practice. I often use my 40+ years of outdoor adventure and climbing mountains to speak and write about leadership, team development, and personal development as I coach clients to move to the next step in life and in business. I value the essence of desire and find that when people identify their desires and move toward them, their life demonstrates fullness and aliveness. I keep people from saying “I shoulda, coulda or woulda” and help them navigate toward their goals, summits and desires.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Coming from a career in higher education, my challenge in starting a business was learning a new language and mindset, connecting with other coaches and entrepreneurs, and starting at ground level. I hadn’t yet determined who my audience would be, where I would find clients, and what my mission would be. In other words, what do I have to offer that sets me apart from other coaches, trainers, and speakers? I eventually turned to what ignites me and the authentic value I can bring to others.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Business Summit Coach and Speaker who best serves clients who have an adventurous spirit and want to grow. Adventure does not mean they have kayaked over Niagara Falls or climbed Mt. Everest. It means they are willing to step out, take risks, and explore the unknown in order to move closer to their goals and dreams, leading to a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

I use my years of adventure and climbing mountains as metaphors for helping clients move to the next level. The outdoors provides a safe and informal way for people to explore and discover but also bring clarity and direction to their life and business.

I am proud to have served and inspired the many students I have had the honor of leading and teaching. They inspired me to be better and do better along the way.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
As a two time author, I share insights from my own experiences in climbing mountains.

“Achieving your potential: 15 empowering steps to reach each summit.” I provide the insight and direction to move people toward their identified summits (goals, dreams and aspirations).

:UNFLAPPABLE: Leadership lessons from climbing mountains.” I share stories about the successes and mistakes I learned in my own leadership development process. The stories provide insight to all who are continually developing their own leadership in life and in business.

Mastermind on the Mountain Program: I believe nature facilitates change. This program involves masterminding while hiking up and down trails where participants connect with nature, stretch their mind, explore their potential and clarify their direction. It’s an informal way to meet others, have fun and comfortably explore topics directly impacting your business.

Meet Rena Koesler | The Value and Power in Taking Risks

Featured in Shout Out Colorado, March 16, 2021

We had the good fortune of connecting with Rena Koesler and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rena, how do you think about risk?

Seeing life as an adventure, taking risks is an essential component of adventure. As a former professor in the field of adventure education, I exposed students to activities that appeared “risky.” I gave them every support and encouragement to step out and take the risk…to jump off, to climb, to go through a rapid, to pitch tents in a rain storm, etc. These kinds of risks spilled over into their everyday lives as they faced daily challenges, new situations, anticipated fears and uncomfortable situations. Taking a risk means that you recognize the limitations of being in the comfort zone. Risk is the zone where growth happens and where you develop the judgment necessary to take with you in future experiences. I am an avid risk taker as it relates to both the adventure world and in my personal life. I often say to myself “what do I have to lose?” Do the losses supersede the gains? Much of the time they do not. The more I have “stepped out” over my life, the more confidence I have gained in taking future risks. This is the philosophy I intentionally encourage people to pursue on their road to living a more fulfilled life and eliminating the phrases, “I shoulda, coulda and woulda.” As a Business Coach, I work with clients’ limiting beliefs and help them navigate next steps to grow personally and professionally.

Why Climb Mountains

Featured in Prime Time News, Jul 29, 2020

Rená Koesler is not your average 64-year old. On the other hand, who is average at this age, right? We have lived over half our age by now, gained some wisdom to take with us into our golden years, and have earned greater freedom to explore our best sides.

Rená has been climbing mountains for over 40 years and continues seeking the wonder she finds when she summits a peak. Petroleum Peak, located in the Wind River Mountains in Wyoming was her first technical climb and summit of any mountain. Having grown up in the Midwest, a peak that stood over 11,000 feet in elevation was daunting for a flatlander – she really wanted to know what it was like to peer over the top and take in the views.

She was one of 14 students on a wilderness leadership program to learn about travel in the backcountry, outdoor cooking, fire building, tent pitching, backcountry medicine, fishing, and climbing. As she stood at the base of this mountain in 1977 with 3 of her fellow participants, she was both nervous and excited. Her instructor proceeded to climb up the mountain, set an anchor and then belay the rest of the group as they climbed up the peak. It took three rope lengths and belays for everyone to reach the summit. No time to take in the views as it was dusk and time was the essence to rappel back down to the base where it was completely dark by then. Once at the base, they proceeded to navigate their way through a boulder field and willows before returning to base camp where the rest of the group was waiting. It was 11:30 at night and 16 degrees. Yes, everyone was beat! Rená awakened the next morning and said to herself “THIS is what I want to do for the rest of my life.”

For 30 years, she shared her love of nature, adventure and climbing mountains with college students. Since retiring from there, she has moved to Morrison, Colorado and continues bringing value to others through Business “adventure” Coaching and Speaking.

She continues to climb mountains. However, the greatest climbing challenge she experienced was in October, 2019 in Nepal. Island Peak (20, 300 ft.) was a peak Rená had yearned to climb for over 20 years when she first set eyes on it. She told herself that she wasn’t getting any younger and the thought of regret IF she did not pursue it, was ultimately the drive that sealed the decision. On Oct. 15th, she summitted Island Peak.

Shortly after returning from Nepal, she began writing her book. She had something to say and wanted the message to be of value to anyone who wishes to grow, learn and pursue their dreams. By Christmas it was completed.

She has used the adventure of climbing mountains as a metaphor to continue putting one foot in front of the other. Decide, visualize, plan, prepare, act, use your compass, and have faith to continue. Before you know it, you have reached your summit or greatest desire. She often takes others on outdoor hikes to provide encouragement and accountability to move toward their goals.

Reach out to Rená if you should need a guest speaker or are simply interested to learn more about what she does. She will welcome the connection.

A Special Story

Featured in Himalayan Children’s Fund News, Dec 16, 2019

In October, former Professor Emerita of Longwood University, Rená Koesler, trekked Mt Everest base camp (17,600 ft), climbed Mt Kalapathar (18,500 ft), and summitted Island Peak (20,300 ft) along with a former Longwood student and other companions. Since Rená had previously taken Longwood University students to visit SMD Boarding School and provide leadership programs for the children, she turned her challenging trip into a fundraising challenge on Facebook. Rená invited people to share and support her experience by donating to her cause ~ SUPPORT SMD SCHOOL. Her hopeful goal of $1,000.00 became a donation 0f $1,840.00 through the kindness and enthusiasm 0f many. We are grateful and celebrate Rena’s fortitude and humanitarian spirit. After her climb of Island Peak, she returned to Kathmandu to speak to the senior class at the SMD school.  She provided guidance and inspiration about where they “grow” and how they can contribute to their country after they graduate.

While you need not climb a mountain, you can easily create your own fundraiser on Facebook and invite friends to support your cause, whatever it may be. If you select HCF as the non-profit recipient we receive the funds free of charge.

I had a delightful and engaging “Chat” with Jason Todd earlier this week on his Coffee with Humans Podcast. We talked about how to identify one’s summit or desire and what to do with it once you have discovered it. It takes work and time to uncover what it is you are really meant to do/be. You’ll know it once you discover it. If you are stuck, have misplaced where you are going and need a boost of inspiration, I know you will glean insight from this conversation. ENJOY!

A fabulous discussion on Mental Shift with Michelle Mras. We discussed my adventurous spirit and how you can find yours. My book is a guide for anyone who desires to create a meaningful future.

Give Back Program with Gary Barnes: The intention of climbing your summit

This 5-minute clip from an interview with Gary Barnes provides the listening audience the inspiration to go for what you want. Having recently climbed Island Peak (20,300 ft) in Nepal, it was my will, intention and desire that got me to the summit. I further use metaphors to illustrate the power that is in all of us to move us to where we want to go and what we want to achieve. Lastly, I shared my book, “Achieving your potential: 15 empowering steps to reach each summit.” This book can be a value to anyone who is needing the motivation and inspiration to get on the bus and drive it. Your summit can be your dream, calling or desire and the book provides you the steps to get there.

I personally know Rená and I thoroughly enjoy the things she speaks about relating to achieving your goals. They reflect everything in this book. Her ideas are full of fearlessness, faith, and adventure! Reaching whatever summit yours may be, maybe not physical, maybe an abstract goal, is the foundation of her teachings. In this 15 step book, she writes personal stories, messages, and lessons that inspire one to do more with oneself.

The size of Rená Koesler’s book may be “itty bitty” but the wisdom and practical advice she lays out is broad and deep. There is a gem worth mining on every page. I imagine returning to “Achieving Your Potential” every time I dream of a new goal and envision another adventure.

This book is a guidebook presenting the steps along the way to achieving your summit – your goals. Starting with defining what you want to achieve and why, it takes you through the vision of your goal and how to plan and prepare for your climb. Along the way there may be obstacles, and you may need support, and the important element is that you take action and keep going. This would have been helpful to me when I was in graduate school, to have a support like this by my side to refer to would have made the journey easier.
I recommend this book to anyone who is on a journey to reach their goals. You can keep it by your side and use it to keep track of your progress.

Denise Schickel

I highly recommend this book in use towards achieving your goal, whatever that might be. This book provides straightforward and effective steps towards goal achievement. It has already worked for me in organizing, planning and execution of increasing my cashflow for my growing small business – and the moment I started following the planning steps my anxiety on how I was going to achieve this goal immediately went down. As we’ve all heard about so many self-help books, “it has some great points but they could have been conveyed in 30 pages rather than 300” – this book actually has applied this feedback! It’s 30 pages of effective and easy-to-follow (and reference) guidance without the extra fluff.

Ryan Schoop

I love how inspiring this book is! This book gave some really practical and uplifting tips to help me (and others I’m sure) get over a few of the things that keep me stuck from definitely achieving my potential. Thank you! – Katrina Sawa, Business Coach, Speaker & Author
